Save your favorite TV shows and home movies to recordable DVDs or VHS tapes with the Sony RDR-VX555. Though it has no built-in tuner of its own, it can control most cable boxes and satellite receivers for hassle-free timer recording. Other conveniences include front-panel audio/video jacks and a digital camcorder input for trouble-free dubbing. General Features
Overview: The Sony RDR-VX555 can record video and audio to blank DVD discs, or to the built-in VHS recorder through the unit's audio/video inputs. The unit has a front panel DV input jack (also referred to as iLINK or IEEE1394) for dubbing from Mini DV and Digital 8 camcorders. Two line inputs (including one on the front) allow you to record from several sources.
Note: This DVD/VHS recorder does not include a TV tuner and there are no antenna coax terminals present. To record TV programs on this DVD/VHS recorder, you need to connect the DVD/VHS recorder to a tuner that has RCA audio/composite video output jacks.
HDMI Output With 720p/1080i Upscaling: The Sony RDR-VX555 DVD/VHS recorder will read the data on a standard DVD disc at 480p and a VHS tape and upscales the video resolution to 720p or 1080i resolution on your compatible television. This allows for you to enjoy the best in video performance while delivering digital video and audio over one simple cable HDMI cable.
Progressive Scan: The DVD recorder can output progressive scan video signals from the component video outputs. Progressive scan video has less flicker and fewer motion artifacts than the traditional interlaced scanning method, resulting in a superior picture. To watch progressive scan video, you must have a television with component video inputs that supports the progressive scanning mode. You can record progressive scan video signals.
Dubbing: You can dub (copy) from a DVD to a VHS tape, or from a VHS tape to a DVD. You cannot dub material that contains copyright protection.
Copy Protection: Pictures with copy protection, including most commercially-recorded DVDs, cannot be recorded on this DVD recorder. The recorder stops when it detects a copy guarded signal. Some broadcasts that contain Copy Control signals may have one of three signal types: Copy-Free, Copy-Once, or Copy-Never. The recorder limits the recording according to the copy protection signal. Copy-Free encoded signals can be recorded at any time with any compatible blank disc type. Copy-Never encoded signals can not be recorded on this unit. Copy-Once programs can be recorded on a DVD-R/RW disc formatted in the VR mode, and can be played only on CPRM-compatible equipment.
Set Top Box Control: This function allows the DVD/VHS recorder to control your cable box or satellite receiver via the supplied set top box controller IR repeater. You can then use the DVD/VHS recorder's remote control to change channels on your cable box/satellite receiver whenever the cable box/satellite receiver and the DVD/VHS recorder are turned on. You will need to register a code from your cable/satellite box to the DVD/VHS recorder from the supplied owner's manual.
TV Type: This feature allows you to select the aspect ratio of the unit's video output to match your television. You can select from 16:9 Wide, 4:3 Letter Box, or 4:3 Pan Scan.
Black Level: This feature allows you to raise the standard black level when the TV's picture appears too dark.
Picture Control: This feature allows you to adjust the video signal from the DVD/VHS recorder to obtain the picture quality you want. You can choose from the following settings.
Dynamic 1: produces a bold dynamic picture by increasing the picture contrast and the color
Dynamic 2: produces a more dynamic picture than the Dynamic 1 setting by further increasing the picture contrast and the color
Standard: displays a standard pictures
Cinema 1: white colors become brighter and black colors become richer and the color contrast is increased
Cinema 2: enhances details in dark areas by increasing the black level
Personal: allows you to adjust the Contrast, Brightness, Color and Hue independently and manually
Virtual Surround: When you connect the unit to a TV or a stereo receiver with two speakers, virtual surround lets you enjoy surround sound effects by using sound imaging to create virtual rear speakers from two speakers. There are three levels of virtual surround - Surround 1, Surround 2, and Surround 3, creating progressively more surround effect. The surround effect is only output from the analog RCA audio jacks, not digital.
Child Lock: You can lock all of the buttons on the recorder so the settings are not canceled or a disc or tape is ejected by mistake.
Display Dimmer: You can set the display to Bright, Dim, Auto (dims when power is off) or Off (turns off the lighting when power is off and maintains the lighting when power is on.
Remote Control: The supplied remote control (RMT-D240A) can control the DVD/VHS recorder, as well as multiple brands of TVs (basic functions). If more than one Sony DVD player is being used at the same time, you can select one of three command codes to prevent conflicts.
DVD Recorder Features
DVD Recording: This unit features a DVD recorder and can record on several types of blank 12cm DVDs. Here are the major differences in the disc types:
DVD-R: You can record only once on DVD-R discs (16x speed or slower, Ver.2.0, Ver.2.1 with CPRM)--they are not erasable or rewritable. You can readily play finalized DVD-R discs on other DVD equipment.
DVD+R: You can record only once on a DVD+R disc (16x speed or slower)--they are not erasable or rewritable. You can playback only on DVD+R compatible players. Finalization is required.
DVD+R DL (Dual Layer) (8.5GB): You can record only once on a DVD+R Dual Layer disc (8x speed or slower)--they are not erasable or rewritable. You can playback only on DVD+R compatible players. Finalization is required.
DVD+RW: You can erase and record over previously recorded material, however, it is more difficult to edit recorded contents without another recorder. DVD+RW discs can be played back on DVD+RW compatible players. (Compatible with 8x speed or slower DVD+RW discs)
DVD-RW: You can erase and record over previously recorded material. (Compatible with 6x speed or slower DVD-RW Ver.1.1, Ver.1.2 with CPRM). This disc can be formatted in two different recording modes:
DVD Video Format (Video Mode): Disc recorded in this mode can be played in many other DVD players, but editing is more difficult.
DVD Video Recording Format (VR mode): Discs recorded in this mode won't playback in other DVD players as readily (VR compatible players only). Recorded material can be edited right on the disc without disturbing the original recordings. You can also manually create chapters whenever you like instead of at fixed time intervals as on other discs or DVD-RW in Video mode.
Disc Playback Compatibility: Discs that can be played on this unit but not recorded include:
DVD Video: includes pre-recorded movies that can be purchased or rented
Video CD: includes Video CDs, and CD-Rs and CD-RWs recorded in Video CD format (with PBC function)
Audio CD: includes music CDs, and CD-Rs and CD-RWs recorded in music CD format
Data CD: includes CD-Rs and CD-RWs created on a PC or similar device in music CD format, MP3 or JPEG format that conforms to ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2 or Joliet formats
Data DVD: includes DVD+RWs, DVD-RWs, DVD+Rs, and DVD-Rs recorded in MP3 or JPEG format conforming to UDF
8 cm DVD+RW, DVD-RW and DVD-R: 8 cm DVD+RWs, DVD-RWs, DVD+Rs, and DVD-Rs recorded with a DVD video camera (Exception: Still images recorded with a DVD video camera cannot be played.)
MP3 Playback: This unit will play MP3 files recorded onto CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level 2 and Joliet formats. The recorder will recognize a maximum of 499 audio tracks within an album. Only one session of a multi-session MP3 recording on DVD can be played. The DVD recorder is not compatible with the MP3PRO and will not display ID3 tags.
JPEG Playback: The DVD recorder will play JPEG image files recorded onto CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level 2 and Joliet formats. The recorder will recognize a maximum of 999 audio tracks within a folder. Only one session of a multi-session recording on DVD can be played. JPEG images can be enlarged, rotated and played in a slide show manner. When a disc contains both MP3 audio tracks and JPEG image files, you can enjoy a slide show with sound.
Recording Speeds: You can select from eight variable bit-rate speeds when recording to a blank DVD. The picture quality generally improves as the recording time decreases. The recording speeds and approximate recording times are:

Recording: The RDR-VX555 offers several ways to record:
Manual Recording: Record a currently tuned channel from your connected cable box/satellite receiver or line input from another source until you stop the recorder or the disc is full
Quick Timer (One Touch Recording): Each press of a button records the currently tuned channel in 30-minute increments, up to 8 hours (14 hours, 30 minutes if using a dual layer disc)
Timer Recording: Set the timer for a total of 12 programs up to one month in advance, set the date, time, channel, and recording mode (speed) of the program manually
Synchronized Recording: Set the DVD recorder to automatically record from a connected component that has a timer function (cable box or satellite receiver), when the other component turns on, the recording starts automatically
One Touch Dubbing Via DV Input: The unit features a DV Input and an "One Touch Dubbing" button on the front panel which allows for the easy copying of your personal content from a DV/Digital 8 camcorder to a DVD disc in order to preserve your recordings for a long time, or to share it with your relatives and friends.
Auto Chapters: The DVD recorder will automatically divide a recording (a title) into chapters by inserting chapter marks at 5 or 15-minute intervals during recording. If you do not want to divide titles you can turn this feature off.
Record Timer Overlap: If your timer settings overlap, the program that starts first has priority and the second program starts recording only after the first program has finished. If the programs start at the same time, the program listed first in the menu has priority. If the end time of one setting and the start time of another timer setting is the same, the beginning of the program that starts later will be cut.
Editing: The DVD recorder offers various options for editing recorded material. Basic editing functions include setting protection against erasure, labeling a title, erasing a title, erasing multiple titles, and erasing a section of a title (A-B Erase). Some discs offer more advanced editing options such as creating and editing playlists, rearranging the title order, dividing a title into multiple titles, and combining multiple titles into one title.
Instant Replay/Instant Advance: Instant Replay jumps backward several seconds to let you replay a scene or portion of dialog you may have missed, while Instant Advance jumps ahead several seconds to quickly skip to another scene.
Fast Forward With Sound: You can play back video quickly with dialogue or sound during Fast Forward 1 of a DVD with Dolby Digital soundtracks.
Parental Control: You can restrict playback of some DVD videos according to a predetermined level, such as the age of the users. Scenes may be blocked or replaced by different scenes. The parental control feature is protected by a 4-digit password.
VHS Recorder Features
VHS Recording: The RDR-VX555 features a 4 video head stereo VHS recorder with 19 micron heads and can record in the VHS format but cannot record in the Super VHS (S-VHS) format.
Recording Modes: The VHS Recorder can record in two modes (speed): SP or EP. The maximum recording time is as follows:

Recording Methods: You can record to the VHS recorder using any of four methods:
Timer Recordings: You can set the timer for a total of 12 programs up to a month in advance. The maximum length of recording depends upon the tape being used (Maximum recording on a T-120 tape is 6 hours). The total number of programs includes both DVD and VCR timer recordings.
One-Touch Timer Recording: You can set the recorder to record in 30-minute increments up to 6 hours.
Non-Timer Recording: After selecting the recording mode (SP or EP), you can press the record button and the unit will record the presently tuned channel until the tape is full or the recorder is stopped.
Synchro Recording: You can set the recorder to automatically record programs from connected equipment that has a timer function (such as a satellite tuner). The equipment should be connected to the Line 1 Input jacks. The recorder starts only when a video signal is detected at the Line 1 Input.
Auto Index: The VHS recorder will automatically mark the tape with an index signal at the point where each recording begins allowing you to easily find a specific point using various search functions of the recorder.
SQPB: The VHS recorder will play tapes recorded in VHS or S-VHS formats. The unit has SQPB (S-VHS Quasi Playback), and tapes recorded in S-VHS are played back at VHS quality.
Tape Advance/Replay: The Tape Advance feature allows you to fast forward for 30 seconds during playback. The advance button can be pressed up to 4 times to forward approximately 2 minutes. The Replay feature lets you briefly rewind during playback. For tapes recorded in SP or LP, Replay will back up approximately 10 seconds, while tapes recorded in EP, Replay will rewind approximately 15 seconds.
Inputs and Outputs Notes
A/V Inputs: This recorder features 2 audio/video inputs:
Rear Panel (Line In 1): The rear panel input includes composite video and stereo RCA audio jacks. This input can detect incoming signals, and automatically start the recorder (DVD or VCR) when the unit is set to "Synchro Recording".
Front Panel (Line In 2): The front panel input includes composite and S-Video, and stereo RCA audio jacks, convenient for connecting a camcorder or game console. If the connected device has only one audio plug (mono), you can plug it into the left channel input and the audio will be recorded to both the left and right channels on the tape or disc. These connections are hidden behind a fold-down door.
DV Input: The front panel DV input allows you to connect the recorder to a MiniDV or Digital 8 camcorder with a DV jack via a single 4-pin i-LINK cable. It is compatible with the i-LINK standard, and allows you dub from the DV-compatible device to the recorder. The DV IN jack is for input only. Note: Micro-MV format digital video cameras are not compatible with this recorder, even though they may have an i-LINK jack. This connection is hidden behind a fold-down door.
A/V Outputs: The recorder is equipped with a line output with stereo audio and composite, S-Video and component video jacks. Audio and video signals from both the DVD and VCR are output through theses video outputs. In addition, there is an additional stereo RCA audio output for connecting the unit to a TV, powered speakers, or an A/V receiver.
HDMI Output: The RDR-VX555 features an HDMI output for transfer of digital video and audio from both the DVD and VCR via a single cable to your HDTV.
Digital Outputs: This unit offers a coaxial digital and a Toslink optical digital output. These outputs are compatible with Dolby Digital and DTS, so you can connect the recorder to a surround sound receiver built-in with Dolby Digital and DTS decoders. You can also use the digital outputs to connect the DVD recorder to a MiniDisc or DAT deck.
