Panasonic DMR-EZ48V DVD Recorder w/ Remote, Manual; recording function UNTESTED

Here's the story. I got this from my 91-y/o father's closet recently. He said he couldn't remember if it worked or not. Well, I plugged it in, connected an HDMI cable from this unit to my new Samsung TV, and yes, it will play DVDs and VHS tapes. The remote works well (included). Now to test whether it will record DVDs and VHS -- by my reading of the instruction book (included), you need both an HDMI cable and the component A/V cables (red/white/yellow RCA-type). I did not have those, so I went out and bought a set (included), only to discover that my Samsung TV does not have input jacks for component A/V.
Do I run out and buy an older TV with said jacks? No, I give up, slash the price, and guarantee it will PLAY both DVDs and VHS. NO GUARANTEE IT WILL RECORD DVD/VHS because I can't test it. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. If it doesn't, this is a great unit for rebuilding or parts, cuz it looks nice and has the all-important remote and 100-page operating instructions. And the component A/V cables. You can provide the HDMI cable yourself. I'll throw in my fervent hopes it records for free :-) maybe you will get a bargain!
